A more personal running coach for your Apple Watch
BetterRunning is an AI running coach for runners who want structure without the noise. It builds a training plan around your goal, reads the signals from your Apple Watch and Apple Health, and adjusts your training when your body says the original plan no longer makes sense.
It is designed for people who take running seriously, but not professionally. People who want to improve, run more consistently, prepare for a race, or understand their training better — without turning every run into a leaderboard, a streak, or a performance identity.

Why BetterRunning exists
Most running apps are very good at collecting data. They can show pace, distance, heart rate, splits, routes, achievements, and trends. But data by itself is not coaching. A useful coach interprets what happened, understands what should happen next, and knows when the best session is not the hardest one. That is the space BetterRunning is built for: the moment between the numbers and the decision. Should you push today? Should you keep it easy? Is the plan still realistic? Are you improving, or just accumulating fatigue? BetterRunning uses your recent training, recovery, sleep, HRV, pace zones, and goals to give you a clearer answer.
Built for procreational runners
BetterRunning is not built for elite athletes with a full coaching team. It is also not only a casual tracker for occasional runs. It is built for what I think of as the procreational runner: someone above purely recreational, but not professional. A runner who may be training for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or simply a stronger base. Someone who wants progress, but wants that progress to fit into real life. Work, family, stress, travel, poor sleep, good weeks, bad weeks — all of it affects training. BetterRunning is designed around that reality.
What BetterRunning does
It builds a plan from your actual running history
Tell BetterRunning your goal and it looks at the data that matters before building a plan. Your recent runs, weekly volume, long-run history, pace zones, and current fitness all help shape the schedule. The result is not a generic template. It is a periodized plan that starts from where you are now and works toward where you want to go.
It adapts every morning
A plan can look perfect on Sunday evening and still be wrong by Wednesday morning. If you slept poorly, your HRV drops, your training load is high, or your readiness is low, BetterRunning can adjust the day before you lace up. Sometimes that means a lighter run. Sometimes it means keeping the workout as planned. Sometimes it means protecting the next session by recovering today.
It runs on your Apple Watch
BetterRunning is built for iPhone and Apple Watch. Your plan lives on your wrist, with live pace, heart rate, interval phase tracking, haptic cues, and readiness at a glance. The point is simple: when you are running, you should not need to manage your phone.
It learns from completed runs
After each session, BetterRunning uses what actually happened to improve the plan. It can recalibrate pace zones, review performance against the target, and give feedback that is specific rather than motivational filler. Good coaching should be honest, useful, and proportionate.
It keeps your training picture together
Runs recorded through apps that write to Apple Health, including Strava and Garmin Connect, can be pulled into BetterRunning. That means the app can reason from your broader training history, not only the sessions started directly inside BetterRunning.
It lets you message your coach
Plans change because life changes. If you are travelling, injured, busy, tired, or need a lighter week, you can tell the coach in plain language and revise the plan around your situation. You remain in control. The plan is adjusted only after you confirm the change.
Training that understands recovery
One of the most important design choices in BetterRunning is that the app should not always push. Running progress comes from work, but also from adaptation. A hard session on the wrong day can be less useful than an easy run, or even a rest day. BetterRunning uses readiness signals such as HRV, sleep, and training load to help make that distinction. The goal is not to do less. The goal is to train at the right intensity more often.
Privacy by design
Health data deserves restraint. BetterRunning processes key health information on-device where possible. The AI coach receives aggregated numbers such as readiness, sleep totals, or pace information — not your raw health records, identity, Apple ID, device ID, or location. There are no advertising frameworks, analytics SDKs, or hidden marketing databases behind the product. Your training data lives on your device and in your private iCloud. For runners who opt in, BetterRunning can also support cycle-aware coaching. That layer is designed to be private and understated: the app can adjust tone, intensity, and recovery guidance without exposing unnecessary personal detail in the coaching text.
A quieter running app
BetterRunning has a point of view. It is not built around leaderboards. It is not trying to make every runner louder, faster, or more public. It is built around sustainable progress: the kind that comes from consistency, context, and intelligent adjustment. That does not mean unambitious. It means ambition with better timing. Run hard when your body is ready. Run easy when that is smarter. Rest when rest protects the next step. That is the kind of running product I wanted to use, so I built it.
